Del maestro al mediador </h1>

Hoy día ya no solamente la sociedad ha evolucionado, sino los oficios.
El digno rol del maestro (profesor o docente), es identificado como de
facilitador, motivador, mediador; ya la figura de quien enseña ha bajado
del pedestal inalcanzable del conocimiento-autoridad y se ha difuminado
con los estudiantes y aprendices, formando un equipo de aprendizaje.
Esto lleva a la necesidad de comprender el acto educativo desde sus
raíces sociales y comunitarias.<br />
La educación es un fenómeno social, una idea asumida por todos aquellos
que algo tienen que decir acerca de ella. Ya en sus albores la
sociología se ocupaba de ello: Émile Durkheim lo aclaraba de la
siguiente manera "la educación común es función del estado social; pues
cada sociedad busca realizar en sus miembros, por vía de la educación,
un ideal que le es propio". De ahí también la importancia política de la
educación: la posibilidad de establecer un determinado orden social
descansa en la forma cómo los ciudadanos entienden el rol de la
sociedad, de sus organizaciones y de ellos mismos dentro de este sistema
de relaciones; y esa forma de entendimiento sólo es posible de lograr
mediante la educación de las personas. Hablamos entonces de la
construcción del espacio social, es decir, de esa realidad invisible que
no se puede mostrar ni tocar con los dedos y que organiza las prácticas
y las representaciones de los agentes de una sociedad. Lo anterior sólo
es posible mediante un proceso de transmisión de conceptos de persona a
persona, de un educador a un educando a través del cual se van
asimilando las particulares maneras de entender el mundo que cada
sociedad y, por ende, cada cultura ha asumido para sí.<br />
Ahora bien, el hombre, ser social por naturaleza, se hace -o rehace- en
la medida en que es educado. El proceso de aprendizaje humano desde el
punto de vista de su incorporación al mundo, bajo la idea de que su
naturaleza social no basta para adaptarlo a la vida organizada con otros
seres humanos, pues no hablamos de organizaciones sencillas, sino
complejas, cargadas de historia, valores e intrincadas significaciones,
"en sociedades tan vastas como las nuestras, los individuos son tan
diferentes los unos de los otros, que no hay, por así decir, nada de
común entre ellos, salvo su cualidad general de ser hombres" decía
Durkheim. Pues bien, así mirada la educación lo que propone es la
construcción de un "hombre nuevo", distinto de cómo lo ha engendrado la
naturaleza, busca crear un ser social; pues es la sociedad la que nos
enseña a dominarnos, a constreñirnos, es también, siguiendo sus
necesidades, la que decide la cantidad y naturaleza de los conocimientos
que debe recibir el niño y es la que conserva la conciencia adquirida
por las generaciones anteriores y también la que la transmite a las
nuevas generaciones.<br />
En este aspecto, el capital cultural no se hereda en los genes ni se
adquiere por osmosis, es el resultado de un complejo proceso de
apropiación en el que la persona es introducida a la cultura por otras
personas en una relación dialéctica de construcción del conocimiento.
Pues bien, esto se aplica de igual manera al aprendizaje de la docencia.
Los profesores, quienes serán los responsables del aprendizaje de sus
alumnos, con todo lo que ello implica, son a su vez aprendices de otros
profesores, de los que van a recibir las nociones que les van a permitir
crear sus propias concepciones respecto de su labor docente y su rol
social. Entonces es primordial que se reflexione acerca de sus procesos
de formación. El proceso de formación de los estudiantes, para el caso
de la formación de los profesores tenemos que tener en cuenta cuál es
rol que la educación como fenómeno tenga en la sociedad, la que a su vez
va a definir lo anterior según a sus particulares aspiraciones y forma
de proyectarse en el tiempo. Pues bien, no es lo mismo esperar de la
educación la repetición de un modelo social que preparar un cambio de
paradigma, y en este mismo sentido, no es lo mismo un profesor que
trabaja por la perpetuación de un sistema, que aquel que lo hace por una
transformación.<br />
Lamentablemente las condiciones en las que esto se ha estado dando no
son muy promisorias: la hegemonía de un paradigma cultural fundado en el
positivismo científico e inspirado en el capitalismo económico ha dado
como resultado la presencia de un profesor que se ha limitado a ser un
mero transmisor de conocimientos y las instituciones y programas de
formación docente han sido la mejor "escuela demostrativa" de la escuela
transmisiva, autoritaria, burocrática, que desdeña el aprendizaje. En
este sentido, trayendo como resultado variados problemas tanto para
docentes, como para estudiantes y para el sistema educativo en general,
son de público conocimiento los bajos resultados que el proceso de
reforma educacional en Venezuela hacia una conquista concreta de la
calidad educativa; a eso se suma que se está frente a un sistema
educacional desorientado que busca reinventarse para poder calificar a
la par del resto del sistema social en la panacea de la globalización;
nos enfrentamos a docentes que no cuentan con los recursos didácticos ni
pedagógicos para responder a una realidad que dista de los supuestos
teóricos en los cuales fueron preparados, docentes que, desprestigiados
socialmente, cargan con el trauma histórico de la indiferencia de las
autoridades respecto de sus condiciones laborales, respecto de su
dignificación como profesionales que trabajan en la formación de
personas, respecto de su postergación social junto con todo el sistema
educativo, respecto de su conocimiento del proceso educativo y por ende,
de la validez de su opinión respecto de las posibles reformas y su
implementación. Hay docentes alienados, ajenos en su mayoría a la
información y al debate en torno a los grandes temas de la educación, a
las políticas educativas nacionales e internacionales que definen su rol
y perspectivas presentes y futuras.<br />
A todas estas, uno de los problemas más sensibles de la formación de los
educadores se distingue en las prácticas pedagógicas que se llevan a
cabo y lo que hace es caer en el activismo sin sentido, motivado
únicamente por el afán de obtener resultados (aprobados), cumplir
nuestra función (pasar contenidos) o mantener ocupados a los alumnos
para que no causen molestias (disciplina). No hay una mirada que
trascienda la cotidianeidad y se proyecte a las significaciones que el
trabajo docente contiene, que se detenga, no solamente en las
estrategias y en las didácticas propias de la enseñanza, sino que
analice los precedentes de análisis y el establecimiento de una
reflexión y crítica en la práctica educativa; es necesario elevar la
conciencia social y cultural que lleva consigo el ejercicio de la
docencia, hay que superar la inquietud por trascender y hacerlo de buena
manera, y eso se aprende. La formación docente no puede ser una
revisión de fórmulas didácticas o un adiestramiento en disciplinas
específicas, tiene que ser el espacio que acoja la inquietud del
profesor por trascender, el lugar en donde, mediante la reflexión, pueda
aclarar su posición respecto de la problemática educativa, su rol en la
dinámica social, su forma de entender el mundo. Debe ser el espacio en
donde el profesor pueda hacer conciencia de sí mismo, de su labor y del
mundo y pueda confirmar su compromiso con sus alumnos y su proceso de
aprendizaje, un compromiso responsable con lo que sus existencias puedan
llegar a ser.<br />
Ahora bien, la formación no comienza en la universidad con la
habilitación profesional del profesor, es un continuo que comienza
cuando el docente o futuro docente es estudiante en la escuela primaria o
antes inclusive, considerando una actitud ante el mundo, una forma de
entender las relaciones sociales que implica una conciencia y un
compromiso, y eso viene desde muy largo. Así entendido la
responsabilidad de la formación de los docentes es una doble
responsabilidad, pues afecta a los estudiantes en cuantos estudiantes y
en cuanto a futuros docentes que a su vez multiplicarán su particular
forma de entender la práctica con otros cientos de estudiantes más.
Debemos saber, además, que el continuo formación docente no termina con
la titulación del profesor, sino que se extiende por toda la práctica
educativa, incorporando tanto los saberes sistematizados en la llamada
formación en servicio -o continua- y los saberes extraídos de la
práctica en sí, los que se incorporan como experiencia, sumándose a los
saberes propios de la persona que ejerce el oficio docente y que abarcan
un espectro más amplio que la pura educación.<br />
En concreto, el profesor debe ser capaz de incorporarse a la sociedad, a
la interacción con otras personas y a la institucionalidad que las
organiza, para estar en condiciones de convertir a la escuela en primer
espacio público del niño, creándole posibilidades de percibir, vivir y
actuar, interactuando con las múltiples relaciones que permean toda la
sociedad. En la medida en que el profesor ha aprendido a participar y
comprometerse va a tener la capacidad de enseñar a sus alumnos a
integrarse a la sociedad y al mundo, de manera que cada quien pueda
resguardar su propia individualidad y no hacerse una víctima de la
enajenación. Pero hay que tener muy en cuenta que esto, que significa

Education in America is not as effective as it should be because of <a href="http://www.articlemyriad.com/placing-balanced-educators-relative-professions/">a number of problems</a>
inherent within the system. Because of the way issues of political and
social differences have infiltrated educational policy and
decision-making, students are not being offered a sound way of dealing
with diversity or understanding how to manage differences. Furthermore,
in the midst of more large scale debates centering upon sociopolitical
questions, there are more concrete problems that are not being dealt
with such as the issue of cheating in schools and even the imbalance and
potential unfairness of the grading system.</div>

In many cases, it seems that the problems in the schools are related to an inability to make important decisions about the <a href="http://www.articlemyriad.com/argument-traditional-classroom-online/">future of education</a> in
America. Instead of focusing on the areas of true and immediate
significant importance and value, time is being wasted by infighting and
indecision. Instead of wasting time of these debates, the larger issues
that have an effect on the system as a whole and outcome of educated
young people should be addressed and these other side arguments should
be saved until a time comes that education in America is improved.</div>
<div align="center" style="text-align: left;">
One of the problems with the
American education system is that it has yet to form a consensus about
the role of religion in the classroom. While this is not a statement
meant to argue whether or not religion has a valid place in the public
schools, it is fair to state that this is certainly an area of
contention as opposing sides attempt to standardize how religion is
treated, particularly in textbooks. Because of a lack of agreement,
proponents on both sides use litigation and other actions to determine
religion’s status in schools and this has caused textbook publishers and
other educational entities to have to take a dramatic stance. For
instance, some argue that the efforts to stay away from this debate “has
pushed textbook publishers to excise religion altogether, even from
history class. It is not just the teaching of religion that has become
taboo…It is the teaching of religion” (Goodman 1). No matter where one
stands in the midst of this controversy, it is necessary to at least
admit that a large portion of Western history revolves around religious
ideas.</div>
<div align="center" style="text-align: left;">
As a result of this fact, it
seems as though these textbook publishers who are afraid to include
anything of a religious nature are doing students a disservice since
they are denying the legitimate reasons for many historical and social
truths of history. In other words, political correctness and
oversensitivity about religious issues have clouded education and caused
students to have a rather skewed view of society since they are only
being offered a rather whitewashed version of it. When Goodman suggests
that American schoolchildren need to be taught the importance of
diversity by stating, “it is not that Americans deny their differences
or always resolve them, but that we have managed, until now, to live
with them” (1) she makes an important point about diverse thinking. As
her statement also makes clear, American education cannot gloss over
history and society without cheating students out of a deeper
understanding of differences in opinion. By offering young people only
one narrow way of thinking because of political reasons, it limits their
scope and ability to deal with such social difference later in life.</div>
<div align="center" style="text-align: left;">
Education is not becoming
more ineffective simply because of political wrangling about the role of
religion in schools, but also because there is a lack of understanding
about moral issues, such as <a href="http://www.articlemyriad.com/30.htm">plagiarism</a>.
While its another argument entirely about whether or not the two are
interdependent in some ways (religion and simple morals/ethics) it is
noteworthy that there is a lack of ethical stringency in schools. When
it has been suggested that out of the top American students many cheated
and had ambivalent views about it, it becomes clear that there is a
lapse in ethical lapse in the system itself. According to one of the
statistics in “Their Cheating Hearts” by William Raspberry, “80 percent
had engaged in academic cheating and thought cheating was commonplace.
Moreover, most saw cheating as a minor infraction” (Raspberry 1).</div>
<div align="center" style="text-align: left;">
It is not just that so many
students are cheating but that so few think it is not a major issue.
Even still, as Raspberry notes, many of them contend that they would
wish to live in a community where people “adhered to the highest ethical
standards” (1). This disparity in what students believe about<a href="http://www.articlemyriad.com/plagiarism-college-level-consequences/"> plagiarism</a><strong> </strong>and
what they practice highlights a significant shortcoming in the
education system since it seems it only teaches young people what is
wrong but does not perhaps address how they should apply this to their
lives. Again, one must wonder if the fear of controversy over moral
issues has extended so far that it is shortchanging students of valuable
information that will allow them to make informed, responsible, and
ethical decisions. Instead of getting caught up in debates of great
magnitude (the role of religion in schools, for instance) these
questions should still be posed but should also take into account that
children need to be taught important ethical lessons while the argument
rages on.</div>
<div align="center" style="text-align: left;">
Another important issue that
must be addressed in order to help save the deteriorating state of the
American educational system is that of the grading system. Educational
researchers, students, and teachers at all levels have confronted the
issue of possible imbalance in the system even though, according to one
opinion, “No one has ever demonstrated that students today get A’s for
the same work they used to receive B’s or C’s” (Kohn 1). In other words,
even though there is an ages-old debate about the grading system it is
generally something that comes and goes yet is without a great deal of
merit. In many ways, it seems as though there is a great deal of time
being wasted within the educational system (on the part of educational
researchers, critics, students, and even teachers) about this supposed
problem. Instead of focusing on legitimate issues (such as cheating)
again it seems there are useless or debates that cannot be won that are
taking up precious time and resources. Furthermore, just as in the case
with the problems arising from religious debates in schools, the
question of political correctness is in the background as thinkers
wrestle with the possibility of grade inflation and what is defined by
“too much concern about the students’ self-esteem” (Kohn 1).</div>
<div align="center" style="text-align: left;">
These more ethereal
questions are being posed when the real problem lies in the fact that
there is no consensus about this issue among others. This is another
clear case of the educational system failing because no one can agree
about important factors affecting education in America. Although it
would be impossible to claim that is one standard by which students
would be judged, wasting time on this debate detracts from more
important issues such as how to improve testing scores, how to make sure
students are maximizing their educational experience, and whether or
not the system is attempting to make better citizens out of young
people.</div>
<div align="center" style="text-align: left;">
Even though all of the
problems that have been addressed thus far are important, it is
necessary for thinkers to look at and offer <a href="http://www.articlemyriad.com/analysis-summary-thinking-education-lipman/">commentary on larger societal education issues</a>.
In the case of academic dishonesty there is a move to look at how
students view the issue from a larger cultural/social perspective and
this should occur in other educational debates as well. While it would
be a massive undertaking to change the way high schools function at this
point when the system is already weak, Botstein observes how culture
and social changes are having an effect on even the most basic
assumptions we have about schools. For instance, “The primary cause for
the inadequacy of high school rests with irreversible changes in
adolescent development” (Botstein 1). While this is biological since
adolescents come to maturity more quickly than they did in the past, it
is also a matter of culture. Influences ranging from the home to the
media are making adolescents feel like actual adults and thus perhaps
high school is outdated since “High school was designed to deal with
large children. It is now faced with young adults whose adult behavior
has already begun” (Botstein 1). This kind of thinking moves the
questions about how to fix education forward since it accounts for new
developments with the focus of the schools—the young people themselves
as opposed to the theorists and proponents of morally or
politically-based arguments.</div>
<div align="center" style="text-align: left;">
It is clear that there are
serious problems with the modern American educational system. As it
stands, the solutions to the problems inherent to the American system of
education are within reach if there could be common agreement about
what some of the basic needs of students are instead of the less
concrete concerns. Still, it is important to recognize that all the
theories that have been put forth about what is wrong with schools are
still important, but that they must not overshadow the commitment to
making education more effective in the here and now. If culture and the
rapidly changing state of society can be taken into account, new ideas
about education can be useful. If, however, debates rest on stagnant
arguments that cannot ever be won by either side without even slight
consensus, then education will continue to suffer.</div>
